Why diabetic patients should not eat fruits?

Fruits are sweet, high in sucrose, rich in calories and so it is believed that eating fruits increases the insulin content in body.

Fruits to eat:

Fruits which are rich in fructose are good for diabetic patients because they won’t increase blood sugar in body. You can eat any of these fruit one or the prescribed amount a day so that it is good for you. Here are some fruits which are rich in fructose and low in calories and sucrose,

  • Apple-1/day

  • Watermelon-100 gm a day

  • Grapes-10 nos.

  • Sweet lime(Saathukudi in tamil)
  • Oranges

  • Guava

  • Pomegranate

  • Papaya one big piece a day

  • Tomato

  • Lemon

  • Musk melon(Kirni pazham in tamil)

These fruits when eaten converts fructose into glucose before getting into blood so it won’t increase blood sugar immediately.

How to eat fruits?

One can eat these fruits weekly once, one fruit a day before food. Consume fruit as a whole. Don’t drink processed fruit juices or fruit syrups which may spike your blood sugar. One should eat fruits in empty stomach or before food

Comparatively, apple is low in glucose, high in fructose and carbohydrates so you can eat an apple daily. Don’t peel off the skin of apple. Chew and eat it instead of preparing a juice of it and drink.
